Whiter & Brighter Smile
Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening or tooth bleaching is the process of lightening the color of human teeth. It is ideal for people who have healthy, unrestored teeth (no fillings) and gums. Individuals with yellow tones to their teeth respond best. However, this cosmetic procedure is not recommended for everyone.
There are many teeth whitening systems and products including whitening toothpaste, over-the-counter gels, rinses, strips, trays, and whitening products obtained from a dentist.
At Gordon Street Dental, we understand that every patient is unique; and as a result, we evaluate each patient individually and recommend the treatment that better suits our patient’s situation. We follow the Canadian Dental Association and Ontario Dental Association guidelines.

Healthy Teeth
The two most often side effects that occur with teeth whitening are a temporary increase in tooth sensitivity and mild irritation of the soft tissues of the mouth, particularly the gums.
Most patients in good dental health are great candidates for teeth whitening. Patients with any false teeth, veneers, or fillings should be aware that these materials will not whiten like the natural tooth structure does. However, even in these instances, many times small modifications can be done that can help achieve the desired result. It is always best to book an assessment at Gordon Street Dental to get a better understanding of your situation.
Many factors may cause teeth to stain; that said, teeth change color naturally with age. Also, our daily habits may contribute to the staining process, for example, if you drink tea or coffee, if you regularly eat certain foods (like berries), if you drink red wine, if you smoke or chew tobacco, etc.; they all leave a mark on your teeth over time.
The effects of teeth whitening can last up to 2-3 years and it varies from person to person. A good rule of thumb is to have good Oral Health habits, for example:
- Brush your teeth at least twice daily
- Floss and clean between your teeth once daily
- Schedule regular dental exams and cleanings with Gordon Street Dental
- Limit consumption of drinks that can cause surface stains
- Cease habits such as smoking and chewing tobacco
At Gordon Street Dental, we offer a free teeth whitening treatment when you maintain your regular hygiene appointments. Contact Dr. Mark Lansdell today for a free consultation if you live in Guelph or the surrounding areas.
